What does this fault code mean?
The fault code indicates that cylinder 4 is misfiring. The engine control module (ECM) counts misfires from speed variations in the flywheel and sets the code when there are too many on cylinder 4. The code does not say what type of fault it is. The cause may lie in the fuel, the air intake, the compression or the injection.
Possible causes
- Incorrect fuel quality, for example the wrong fuel for the season
- Clogged crankcase ventilation
- Damaged VVT unit
- Damaged injection valves
- Poor or uneven compression
- Fault in the EGR system
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes; camshaft control codes should be traced first
- 2Check the fuel level and that the fuel is not the wrong type for the season
- 3Check that the intake system does not leak and that the crankcase ventilation is clear
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 4 in live data with the engine running and compare it with the other cylinders
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the injection valve, the compression and the VVT unit

- The engine does not fire on every cylinder

- The engine is difficult to start
- Engine performance has dropped and idle is uneven
