What does this fault code mean?
The catalytic converter can overheat if cylinder 4 misfires so that unburned fuel reaches the exhaust system. The engine control module (ECM) sets the fault code when such misfires are detected early after the engine starts.
Possible causes
- Poor fuel quality
- Clogged or leaking injection valve
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Air leak
- Uneven compression
- Incorrectly calculated ethanol content
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes; camshaft-related codes should be traced first
- 2Check that the fuel suits the season and that the fuel level is sufficient
- 3Check that the intake system and the crankcase ventilation do not leak or are not clogged
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 4 in live data with the engine running and see whether it is raised compared with the other cylinders
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the injection valve and the VVT unit on cylinder 4, and the compression
Symptoms you may notice5
- The engine is hard to start
- Uneven idle
- Poor performance
- The engine hesitates and surges while driven
- The Check engine light lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Lambda control is switched off
