What does this fault code mean?
The fault code indicates that cylinder 5 is misfiring. The engine control module (ECM) measures oscillations in the flywheel and sets the fault code when there are too many misfires on cylinder 5. The code is general and does not say what type of fault it is. The causes may lie in the fuel, the compression or the valve train.
Possible causes
- Repeated cold starts where the engine does not warm up between them
- Contaminated or incorrect fuel
- Clogged or leaking injection valve
- Damaged injection valves
- Dirty or damaged valve lifter
- Dirty or damaged camshaft profile solenoid
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes; camshaft codes should be dealt with first
- 2Make sure the engine oil is correctly filled and that the fuel tank is not nearly empty
- 3Check the injection valve on cylinder 5 and its connectors for damage or oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 5 with the engine running and compare it with the others
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the valve lifters and the camshaft profile solenoid, and update the software if a newer version is available
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning light lights up or flashes
- The engine feels uneven and does not run smoothly
- A message appears in the text display
- The engine starts with difficulty
- The car loses performance
What the fault can affect2
- Lambda control is switched off
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
