What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) sets the fault code when it detects emission-related misfires on cylinder 5 after the engine starts. The code shows that cylinder 5 is the misfiring cylinder and belongs to the codes for incorrect operation.
Possible causes
- Low fuel level
- The engine does not reach operating temperature between several cold starts
- Poor fuel quality, for example summer fuel in winter
- Clogged or leaking injection valve
- Uneven compression
- Incorrectly calculated ethanol content
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes; camshaft control codes should be traced first
- 2Check the fuel level, the fuel quality and the engine oil level
- 3Check the intake system and the crankcase ventilation for leaks or clogging
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 5 with the engine running and see whether it stands out from the other cylinders
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the injection valve, the fuel pressure and the compression on cylinder 5
Symptoms you may notice5
- Starting is difficult and the engine cranks slowly
- Uneven idle
- Poor performance and lack of power
- The engine hesitates or jerks when driven
- The Check engine light lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Lambda control is switched off
