What does this fault code mean?
Cylinder 5 misfires in a way that can damage the catalytic converter, and the engine control module (ECM) sets the fault code early after the engine starts. The result can be an overheated catalytic converter, and the code shows that cylinder 5 is the one misfiring.
Possible causes
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Contaminated or incorrect fuel
- Air leak
- Damaged VVT unit
- Clogged crankcase ventilation
- Uneven compression
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes; camshaft codes are traced first
- 2Check that the fuel suits the season and that the fuel level is sufficient
- 3Check that the crankcase ventilation is not clogged and that the intake air system does not leak
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 5 in live data with the engine running and see whether it is higher than for the other cylinders
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the VVT unit, the fuel pressure and the compression on cylinder 5
Symptoms you may notice5
- The engine starts with difficulty
- Uneven idle
- The engine lacks power
- The engine jerks or hesitates when driven
- The Check engine light lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Lambda control is switched off
