What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) measures oscillations in the flywheel and can detect when cylinder 6 misfires. If there are too many misfires, the fault code is set. The code points to cylinder 6 but does not say what type of fault it is. The cause may lie in the fuel, the air intake, the valve control or the compression.
Possible causes
- Low fuel level
- Repeated cold starts where the engine does not warm up between them
- Poor fuel quality, for example summer fuel in winter
- Air leak
- Clogged or leaking injection valve
- Dirty or damaged camshaft profile solenoid
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes and trace any camshaft codes first
- 2Check that the fuel level is sufficient and that the correct fuel has been filled
- 3Check the intake system for leaks, for example at hoses and connections
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 6 with the engine running and compare it with the other cylinders
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the injection valve, the camshaft profile solenoid and the valve lifter on cylinder 6
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning light lights up or flashes
- The engine does not fire on every cylinder
- The engine jerks and hesitates when driven
- Uneven idle
- The engine feels short of power
