Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (2007–), XC90 (2003–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) measures speed deviations in the flywheel and sets the fault code when cylinder 8 misfires too often. The code does not say what type of fault it is. The cause may lie in the fuel, the fuel pressure, the air intake or the compression.
Possible causes
- Low fuel level
- Repeated cold starts where the engine does not warm up between them
- Poor fuel quality, for example summer fuel in winter
- Air leak
- Clogged crankcase ventilation
- Uneven compression
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes; camshaft control codes should be traced first
- 2Check that the fuel level is sufficient and that the fuel is not the wrong type for the season
- 3Check that the engine oil level is right and that the intake system does not leak
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 8 with the engine running and compare it with the other cylinders
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the injection valve, the fuel pressure and the compression on cylinder 8
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning light lights up or flashes
- The engine is hard to start
- The engine does not fire on every cylinder
- Uneven idle
- Reduced performance
