ECM-P031500 - Crankshaft Position System Variation Not Learned. General Failure Information. No sub type information
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (2007–), V70 (2008–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors ignition. If the engine misfires without any cylinder-specific misfire code having been set, the fault code is stored. It shows that the variation in the crankshaft position system has not been learned. The cause may be poor connections or a damaged crankshaft position sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged crankshaft position sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes; if a cylinder-specific misfire code is present, trace it first
- 2Check the connectors at the crankshaft position sensor and in the wiring harness for play and oxidation
- 3Check the sensor cable for breaks and chafing; with a multimeter, confirm that the cable has no contact with ground (the body)
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the speed signal in live data with the engine running and see whether it jumps or is missing
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check and, if needed, replace the crankshaft position sensor and teach in the crankshaft position
Symptoms you may notice1
- The emissions warning light is on
