What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) receives information from the transmission control module (TCM) over the CAN network, including a request for higher engine speed when downshifting. If the request is not permitted, is invalid or is otherwise faulty, or if the signal from the crankshaft sensor is missing, the fault code is stored. The fault can appear when starting and while driving.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Damaged transmission control module (TCM)
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM)
- Damaged gear position sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the wire connections
- Damaged crankshaft position sensor
What you can do
- 1Check whether the fault remains with the ignition on; clear the fault code and see whether it returns
- 2Check the connectors at the crankshaft position sensor and in the wiring harness for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check the sensor wiring for breaks or short circuits; with a multimeter, confirm that the wire has no contact with ground (the body) or with the positive supply
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the speed signal in live data with the engine running and see whether it is missing or jumps
- 5Safety: the brake control module (BCM) is part of the car's safety systems; have a workshop with diagnostic equipment establish where the fault lies before any part is replaced
Symptoms you may notice2
- The emissions warning light is on
- The starter motor turns but the engine does not start
