What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) continuously monitors the function of the knock sensors. If the signal from either knock sensor is faulty, the fault code is stored. The fault may be caused by a knock sensor that is loose or incorrectly fitted, a damaged sensor, or a fault in the engine control module.
Possible causes
- Loose knock sensor
- Incorrectly fitted knock sensor
- Damaged knock sensor
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the knock sensors are firmly seated and fitted correctly
- 3Check the knock sensor connectors for oxidation and play
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the knock signals from both sensors in live data with the engine running and compare them
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop replace both knock sensors, since the control module cannot tell which one is faulty; if it still remains, the engine control module may need replacing
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor performance and lack of power
