What does this fault code mean?
The signal from knock sensor 1 must stay within certain limits that depend on engine speed. If the signal is above or below the limits, the fault code is set. Knock sensor 1 detects knock on cylinders 5, 6, 7 and 8.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or oxidised terminals at the knock sensor plug
- Loosely fitted knock sensor
- Damaged knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the connector on knock sensor 1 for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check that knock sensor 1 is firmly seated
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the knock signal in live data with the engine running and see whether the value follows the engine speed
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check and, if needed, replace the knock sensor
Symptoms you may notice4
- Reduced performance
- The engine lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly under acceleration
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly at constant speed and when slowing down
What the fault can affect2
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
- Knock control is disabled
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
