What does this fault code mean?
At certain operating points the ECM watches the output of the left knock sensor. If the signal is too high at those points, the fault code is set. The fault may be caused by a loose or incorrectly fitted sensor, a damaged sensor, or a signal cable that has been short-circuited to ground.
Possible causes
- Loose knock sensor
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Incorrectly fitted knock sensor
- Damaged knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the left knock sensor is firmly seated and correctly fitted
- 3Check the signal cable for a short to ground; with a multimeter, confirm that the cable has no contact with the body
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the knock signal from the left sensor in live data with the engine running and see whether the value is too high
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check and, if needed, replace the damaged knock sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor performance and lack of power while driving
What the fault can affect2
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
- Boost pressure is reduced
