What does this fault code mean?
Knock sensor 1, which registers knock on cylinders 5 to 8, must give a signal within limits that change with engine speed. If the signal is higher than the permitted limit, the fault code is set. The causes are the same as for a signal that is too low: contact, a loose sensor or a damaged sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the knock sensor plug
- Loose knock sensor
- Damaged knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and take a short drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the knock sensor is firmly fitted and has not moved
- 3Check the knock sensor plug for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the knock signal in live data at idle and under throttle and see whether it becomes too high in either case
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check and, if needed, replace the knock sensor
Symptoms you may notice4
- Poor performance and lack of power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly during acceleration, slowing down and constant speed
- Reduced performance
- The Check engine light lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
- Knock control is disabled
