What does this fault code mean?
The ECM monitors the left knock sensor signal and sets the fault code when it lies outside its limits. Here the signal is too low, and one possible explanation is a signal cable short-circuited to ground. Poor contact, a break or a damaged sensor can also produce the same result.
Possible causes
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Contact resistance in the knock sensor connections
- Break in the signal cable
- Short circuit between the knock sensors' signal cables
- Damaged knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the signal cable from the left knock sensor for a short to ground; with a multimeter, confirm that the cable has no contact with the body
- 3Check the sensor plug for contact resistance and oxidation, and make sure it is firmly connected
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the knock signal from the left sensor in live data with the engine running and see whether it is too low
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the wiring between the control module and the knock sensor and replace the sensor if needed
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor performance and lack of power while driving
What the fault can affect2
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
- Boost pressure is reduced
