What does this fault code mean?
The signal from the left knock sensor is too low, which can be caused by the cable being short-circuited to ground or by a break (open circuit). The engine control module (ECM) compares the signal with its limit values and sets the fault code when the signal lies outside them.
Possible causes
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Contact resistance in the knock sensor connections
- Break in the signal cable
- Short circuit between the knock sensors' signal cables
- Damaged knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code and drive the car; check whether it returns
- 2Measure the cable from the control module to the left knock sensor: it should be unbroken, and with a multimeter it should have no contact with ground (the body)
- 3Check the earth wire and the connectors in the harness for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the knock signal in live data with the engine running and see whether the value is missing or stays at a constant low level
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check and repair the wiring to the knock sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor performance and lack of power while driving
What the fault can affect2
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
- Boost pressure is reduced
