What does this fault code mean?
Knock sensor 1 on bank 1, the front sensor, gives a signal that is too high for the engine control module (ECM) under certain operating conditions, and the fault code is then set. The control module uses the knock signal to adjust the ignition timing and stop further knock. The cause may be a signal cable short-circuited to voltage, a break, poor contact or a damaged sensor.
Possible causes
- Signal cable short-circuited to voltage
- Break in the signal cable
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the knock sensor plug
- Damaged knock sensor
- Incorrectly fitted knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the signal cable for a short to voltage or a break; with a multimeter, confirm that the cable has no contact with the positive supply
- 3Check the plug on the front knock sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Check that the front knock sensor is firmly seated and correctly fitted
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the knock signal from the front sensor in live data with the engine running and see whether it is too high
Symptoms you may notice4
- Reduced performance
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly during acceleration
- Poor performance and lack of power
- The Check engine light lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect3
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
- Knock control is disabled
- Boost pressure is reduced
