What does this fault code mean?
Knock sensor 2, which registers knock on cylinders 1 to 4, must give a signal within limits that depend on engine speed. If the signal is above or below those limits, the fault code is set. The code indicates a general fault without a more specific type.
Possible causes
- Loosely fitted knock sensor
- Damaged knock sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the knock sensor plug
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car
- 2Check that knock sensor 2 is firmly seated and correctly fitted
- 3Check the plug on knock sensor 2 for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the knock signal from sensor 2 in live data and see whether it follows engine speed
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment replace knock sensor 2 if it is damaged
Symptoms you may notice3
- Reduced performance
- The engine lacks power
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly during acceleration, slowing down and constant speed
What the fault can affect1
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
