What does this fault code mean?
At some operating points the ECM watches the right knock sensor output. If that output is too low, the fault code is set. The causes may be a loose sensor, poor contact, a break in the signal cable, or signal cables that are short-circuited to each other.
Possible causes
- Loose knock sensor
- Contact resistance in the knock sensor connections
- Break in the signal cable
- Short circuit between the knock sensors' signal cables
- Damaged knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car
- 2Check that the right knock sensor is firmly seated
- 3Check the sensor connections for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Check the signal cables for breaks; with a multimeter, confirm that they have no contact with each other
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check and, if needed, replace the damaged knock sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor performance and lack of power while driving
What the fault can affect2
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
- Boost pressure is reduced
