What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) uses the knock sensor signals to detect combustion knock. If the signal from knock sensor 2 stays below its normal range for a certain time, the fault code is set. The fault concerns the rear knock sensor, which monitors cylinders 1 to 4. The cause may be a short-circuited or broken signal cable, poor contact or a damaged sensor.
Possible causes
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Damaged knock sensor
- Contact resistance in the knock sensor connections
- Break in the signal cable
- Short circuit between the knock sensors' signal cables
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the signal cable from the control module to the rear knock sensor for a short to ground; with a multimeter, confirm that the cable has no contact with the body
- 3Check the plug on the knock sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Check that the knock sensor is tightened down
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the earth wire and the signal cable and replace the knock sensor if needed
Symptoms you may notice4
- Reduced performance
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly during acceleration
- Poor performance and lack of power
- The Check engine light lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect3
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
- Knock control is disabled
- Boost pressure is reduced
