What does this fault code mean?
The circuit to the right knock sensor gives a signal that is too low. The cause may be that the cable is short-circuited to ground or broken, so that the circuit is open. The engine control module (ECM) compares the signal with its limits and sets the fault code when it lies outside them.
Possible causes
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Contact resistance in the knock sensor connections
- Break in the signal cable
- Short circuit between the knock sensors' signal cables
- Damaged knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code and test drive the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the cable from the right knock sensor is not broken and has no ground contact; with a multimeter, measure against the body
- 3Check the connectors in the wiring to the right sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the knock signal from the right sensor in live data with the engine running and see whether the value is missing or too low
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check and repair the wiring and replace the knock sensor if needed
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor performance and lack of power while driving
What the fault can affect2
- Ignition timing is retarded as a safety measure
- Boost pressure is reduced
