What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) uses the crankshaft sensor signal to establish the flywheel position at top dead centre (TDC), and it also uses it to calculate engine speed. If the control module cannot establish TDC, or the signal is missing or wrong, the fault code is set. The fault may be caused by interference, poor connections, an incorrectly fitted sensor or a damaged sensor.
Possible causes
- Signal interference
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Incorrectly fitted crankshaft sensor
- Loose connection
- Damaged crankshaft sensor
- Cables short-circuited to ground or voltage
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car
- 2Check that the crankshaft sensor is correctly fitted and has not worked loose
- 3Check the connectors to the crankshaft sensor for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Keep cables with high current draw away from the crankshaft sensor wiring, since interference can make the engine hard to start
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the crankshaft sensor and its wiring and replace it if needed
Symptoms you may notice4
- The engine is hard to start
- Reduced performance
- The engine stalls
- The automatic start/stop function does not work
What the fault can affect2
- The camshaft sensor signal is used instead
- Variable valve timing control is disabled
