What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the crankshaft sensor signal and sets the fault code when the signal is missing or wrong. The causes may be poor connections, breaks or short circuits in the wiring, an incorrectly fitted or damaged sensor, or engine speed that is too high.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
    • Break in the crankshaft sensor wiring
    • Incorrectly fitted crankshaft sensor
    • Damaged crankshaft sensor
    • Engine speed too high
    • Short circuit in the crankshaft sensor wiring

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
    3. 3Check the connectors at the crankshaft sensor for oxidation and contact resistance, and make sure they are firmly seated
    4. 4Check the crankshaft sensor wiring for breaks and short circuits; with a multimeter, confirm that it has no contact with ground (the body) or with voltage
    5. 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check and, if needed, replace the crankshaft sensor

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • The engine does not start
    • Poor performance and lack of power while driving
    • The engine stalls
    • The starter motor does not turn, or a clicking sound is heard when starting is attempted

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
