What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) counts the magnetic poles on the magnet wheel using the crankshaft sensor and checks that the frequency of the signal is correct. If the frequency is wrong, the fault code is set. The cause may be play or oxidised connectors, a damaged magnet wheel or a damaged sensor.

    Possible causes

    • Loose connection
    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
    • Damaged magnet wheel
    • Damaged crankshaft sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact; their locations are shown in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
    3. 3Check the connectors at the crankshaft sensor for play, and that they are firmly seated and clean
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the speed signal in live data with the engine running and see whether it is uneven or jumps
    5. 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the magnet wheel and the crankshaft sensor and replace the damaged part if needed

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The engine stalls
    • The engine does not start and only cranks

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
