Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal from the crankshaft position sensor, which counts the magnetic poles on the magnet wheel while the engine runs. The fault is stored when the signal is implausible, meaning it falls outside the permitted range. It can come from the sensor, its wiring or how it is fitted.
Possible causes
- Loose connection at the sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Crankshaft position sensor fitted incorrectly
- Damaged crankshaft position sensor
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status for the code. A status of 'No fault found' means the fault is not active right now.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check that the connector at the crankshaft position sensor is secure and free from corrosion.
- 4Check that the sensor is correctly fitted and in the correct position.
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the engine speed in live data while the engine runs and check that the value is steady and does not jump.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the sensor and the flywheel.
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine stalls
- Engine does not start and only cranks
