What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named as a bus or message fault, it applies to the signal from the crankshaft position sensor. The engine control module (ECM) follows the pulses from the sensor and counts how many arrive per revolution. The fault is stored when that number is outside the permitted range.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals and connections
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged crankshaft position sensor
- Damaged pulse wheel on the crankshaft
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, read the code and its fault status, start the engine and check whether the fault comes back.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check that the connector at the crankshaft position sensor is secure and free from oxidation.
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the crankshaft position sensor has no open circuit.
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the engine speed in live data while the engine runs and check that the value is steady.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the crankshaft position sensor and the pulse wheel on the crankshaft.
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine does not start, sometimes or every time
- Car hesitates, jerks or runs roughly while driving
