What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) counts the teeth on the flywheel, or the holes in the carrier plate, using the signal from the crankshaft position sensor. The fault is stored when the ECM receives the wrong number of teeth over a set number of revolutions, or when the signal is faulty. The code does not say which type of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the sensor connections
- Sensor fitted incorrectly
- Damage to the flywheel or carrier plate
- Damaged crankshaft position sensor
- Loose connection or short circuit in the sensor wiring
- Signal interference from nearby cables
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine, raise the speed a few times and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means a permanent fault.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check that the sensor connector is secure and free from oxidation and contact resistance, and that the sensor is correctly fitted in the right position.
- 4Check that no cable with high current draw, such as the starter motor cable, lies too close to the sensor or its wiring.
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the engine speed in live data while the engine runs and check that the value is steady.
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the flywheel reference holes and the sensor wiring.

- Automatic engine start/stop does not work
What the fault can affect2
- If the camshaft sensor has been adapted, the ECM uses its signal instead
- Variable valve timing (VVT) control is blocked
