What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal from the crankshaft position sensor while the engine runs. The fault is stored when the signal is missing or faulty, and it can be linked to engine speed being too high or to the sensor wiring. The signal is described as erratic, meaning it is not steady.

    Possible causes

    • Too high engine speed
    • Short circuit in the sensor wiring

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status for the code.
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact.
    3. 3With the ignition off, check that the sensor connector is secure and free from oxidation and contact resistance.
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the sensor wires are not shorted to ground (the body) or to supply voltage.
    5. 5Check that the sensor is correctly fitted in its position.
    6. 6If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the engine speed in live data while the engine runs and check whether the value rises or falls unexpectedly.

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • Engine does not start but cranks
    • Engine stalls
    • Engine lacks power while driving

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
