What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks that the signal from the crankshaft position sensor is present while the engine runs. The fault is stored when the module detects that the signal is missing. It can lie in the sensor, in the wires to it, in the connectors or in the ground.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Open circuit or short circuit to ground in the supply wire to the sensor
- Open circuit or short circuit to ground in the signal wire
- Open circuit in the ground lead
- Sensor fitted incorrectly
- Damaged sensor
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status for the code.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the supply and signal wires to the sensor have no open circuit or short to ground (the body).
- 4Check that the ground lead to the sensor is secure and not broken.
- 5With the ignition off, check that the connectors to the sensor are clean and secure.
- 6Check that the sensor is correctly fitted in its position.
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine stalls
- Engine does not start and only cranks
