What does this fault code mean?

The crankshaft position sensor signal gives the engine control module (ECM) information about crankshaft rotation. The fault is stored when the sensor does not register the gap that should be on the crankshaft, or when the number of teeth per revolution is wrong. The fault therefore concerns the signal's range and performance, and the code does not say which type of fault it is.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
    • Sensor fitted incorrectly
    • Damaged crankshaft position sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine, raise the engine speed a few times and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means the fault is permanent.
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact.
    3. 3With the ignition off, check that the sensor connector is secure and free from oxidation and contact resistance.
    4. 4Check that the sensor is correctly fitted in the right position and that no cable with high current draw lies too close to it or its wiring.
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine speed in live data when the engine starts. The value should rise steadily without jumping.
    6. 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the flywheel reference holes.

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • Check engine light is on or behaves abnormally
    • Engine lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
    • Car hesitates, jerks or runs roughly during acceleration or when slowing down
    • Engine does not start, sometimes or every time

    What the fault can affect2

    • The ECM may use the camshaft sensor signal instead
    • Maximum engine speed is limited

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
