What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) counts the teeth on the flywheel using the signal from the crankshaft position sensor. The fault is stored when the ECM counts at least one tooth too many over a set number of engine revolutions. The code does not say which type of fault it is.

    Possible causes

    • Signal interference
    • Damaged flywheel or ring gear

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means the fault is permanent.
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact.
    3. 3Check that the crankshaft position sensor is correctly fitted in the right position and is not damaged or dirty.
    4. 4Check that no cable with high current draw, such as the starter motor cable, lies too close to the sensor or its wiring.
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the engine speed in live data while the engine runs and check that the value is steady.
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the flywheel and the carrier plate for damage.

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • Engine is hard to start
    • Poor performance

    What the fault can affect2

    • If the camshaft sensor has been adapted, the ECM uses its signal instead
    • Variable valve timing (VVT) control is blocked

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
