What does this fault code mean?
The fault is recorded as intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and it may not be present right now. The engine control module counts the teeth on the flywheel, or the holes in the carrier plate, using the crankshaft position sensor signal. The fault is stored when the count is wrong over a set number of crankshaft revolutions.
Possible causes
- Signal wires have an open circuit or are shorted to ground or supply voltage
- Loose connections
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Sensor fitted incorrectly or damaged
- Damage to the flywheel or carrier plate
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine, raise the speed and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means a permanent fault.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wires to the sensor have no open circuit and no short to ground or supply voltage.
- 4Check that the connector at the sensor is secure and free from oxidation and contact resistance.
- 5Check that the sensor is correctly fitted. If the fault returns, have a workshop check the flywheel and carrier plate for damage.
- 6If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the engine speed in live data while the engine runs and check that the value is steady.
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine stalls
- Engine does not start and only cranks
What the fault can affect1
- The ECM may use the camshaft sensor signal instead
