Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The fault is recorded as intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and it may not be present right now. The engine control module (ECM) checks the signal from the crankshaft position sensor. The fault is stored when the signal is missing or faulty, and the cause can be the connections, the wiring or the sensor itself.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Short circuit in the sensor wiring
- Sensor fitted incorrectly
- Damaged crankshaft position sensor
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status. 'No fault found' means the fault is not active right now.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check that the connector at the sensor is secure and free from oxidation and contact resistance.
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the sensor wires are not shorted to ground (the body) or to supply voltage, and that they have no open circuit.
- 5Check that the sensor is correctly fitted in the right position.
- 6If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the engine speed in live data during a test drive and check whether the value jumps.
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
