What does this fault code mean?
The fault is recorded as intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and it may not be present right now. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal from the crankshaft position sensor. The fault is stored when the signal is missing or incorrect, and the signal is described as erratic.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Short circuit in the sensor wiring
- Sensor fitted incorrectly
- Damaged crankshaft position sensor
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status. 'No fault found' means the fault is not active right now.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check that the sensor connector is secure and free from oxidation and contact resistance.
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the sensor wires have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground (the body).
- 5Check that the sensor is correctly fitted and that no cable with high current draw lies too close to the sensor or its wiring. Such cables can disturb the signal.
- 6If you have a diagnostic tool, read the engine speed in live data during a test drive and check that the value is steady.
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
