What does this fault code mean?
The fault concerns the camshaft position sensor on the intake side, bank 1 (the cylinder bank at the front), or the single sensor if the engine has only one. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the sensor signal, and the fault is stored when the signal is missing or incorrect. The code does not say which type of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire short circuit to ground or supply voltage
- Damaged camshaft position sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the wires to the camshaft sensor
- Camshaft sensor fitted incorrectly
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine, raise the engine speed a few times and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means the fault is permanent.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check that the connector at the camshaft sensor is secure and free from oxidation and contact resistance, and that the sensor is correctly fitted.
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire and the ground lead to the camshaft sensor have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground or supply voltage.
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool and your equipment shows it, read the camshaft sensor position or speed in live data and check that the value follows the engine.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the camshaft sensor and its wiring.
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine is hard to start or does not start, sometimes or every time
- Engine stalls
- Check engine light is on or behaves abnormally
- Car lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- Car hesitates or jerks while driving, for example during acceleration
What the fault can affect2
- The ECM uses the crankshaft sensor signal instead
- Camshaft control is switched off
