What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the camshaft position with the crankshaft and has found that the camshaft signal does not match. On these engines the code mainly points to a mechanical fault, such as an incorrectly fitted or damaged camshaft, rather than an electrical fault.
Possible causes
- Camshaft incorrectly fitted, for example after a timing belt or chain replacement
- Damaged camshaft
What you can do
- 1Find out whether the timing belt, chain or camshaft has recently been replaced or adjusted
- 2Check the engine management fuses
- 3Have a workshop check the valve timing and the camshaft position against the crankshaft
- 4Do not keep cranking if the engine will not start – incorrect valve timing can damage the engine
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start, sometimes or always
- Automatic engine stop/start does not work
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
