What does this fault code mean?
The fault is recorded as intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and it may not be present right now. The engine control module (ECM) reads the PWM signal from the camshaft sensor. The fault is stored when the signal is missing from time to time, or when the camshaft has too few segments over a set number of crankshaft revolutions. The code applies to the intake camshaft sensor on bank 1.
Possible causes
- Camshaft sensor in the wrong position
- Damaged camshaft sensor
- Loose connections
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit or short circuit to ground or supply voltage in the signal wire
- Camshaft sensor fitted incorrectly
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine, raise the speed and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means the fault is permanent.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check that the connector at the camshaft sensor is clean, secure and free from contact resistance and oxidation.
- 4Check that the camshaft sensor is correctly fitted and that the housing around it is not damaged, since that can affect its position.
- 5If your diagnostic tool shows it, read the camshaft sensor position or speed in live data while the engine runs.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the camshaft sensor and its signal wire.
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine is hard to start
- Check engine light (emissions warning lamp) is on
- Automatic engine start/stop does not work
- Car lacks power
- Car hesitates or jerks while driving
What the fault can affect3
- The ECM uses the crankshaft sensor signal instead
- Variable valve timing (VVT) control is blocked
- Camshaft control is switched off
