What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) calculates the crankshaft direction from the signals from the crankshaft sensor and the flywheel sensor. The fault is stored when the calculated direction is wrong, meaning the position recorded when the engine stopped does not match its actual position at start. It can occur in connection with automatic start/stop.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit on the signal cable
- Damaged crankshaft sensor
- Damaged pulse wheel or flywheel
- Damaged cables or connectors
- Crankshaft sensor fitted incorrectly
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means a permanent fault.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check that the connectors at the crankshaft sensor and the flywheel sensor are secure and free from oxidation.
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the crankshaft sensor has no open circuit.
- 5If your diagnostic tool shows it, read the crankshaft sensor signal in live data at engine start.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the pulse wheel, the flywheel and the sensors.
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine does not start, sometimes or every time
- Automatic engine start/stop does not work
- Car hesitates or jerks while driving
- Car lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- Text message and yellow warning symbol shown in the display
What the fault can affect2
- The automatic engine start/stop function is switched off
- Maximum engine speed is limited
