What does this fault code mean?
The fault applies to the ignition coil for cylinder 1. The ECM times the sparks from the ignition coils and checks them through a separate diagnostic line. The fault is stored when the signal for the coil is faulty, and it concerns the primary and secondary circuit of the coil.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation at the coil connector
- Signal cable short circuit to ground or supply voltage
- Open circuit on the signal cable
- Open circuit in the supply cable
- Diagnostic line short circuit to ground or supply voltage, or open circuit
- Damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means the fault is permanent.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check the connector at the ignition coil for cylinder 1 for play, contact resistance and oxidation.
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the ignition coil for cylinder 1 have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground or supply voltage.
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool with actuation functions, activate the ignition coil for cylinder 1 if your equipment allows it, and check whether it responds.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the ignition coil and its diagnostic line.
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine misfires
- Check engine light (emissions warning lamp) is on
- Car lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- Car hesitates or jerks during acceleration
- Car hesitates or jerks at steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- Closed loop control of lambda is blocked
