What does this fault code mean?

The fault concerns the ignition coil for cylinder 2. The coil is part of one of the engine control module's circuits, and the ECM checks the coils' function through a separate diagnostic line. The code is stored when the signal for that coil is faulty.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance and oxidation at the coil connector
    • Signal wire short circuit to ground or supply voltage
    • Open circuit in the signal wire
    • Open circuit in the supply wire
    • Diagnostic line short circuit to ground or supply voltage, or open circuit
    • Damaged ignition coil

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means the fault is permanent.
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact.
    3. 3With the ignition off, check the connector at the ignition coil for cylinder 2 for contact resistance and oxidation.
    4. 4If several coils fail together, suspect the diagnostic or supply wire. If only one fails, suspect its signal wire or the coil.
    5. 5Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the ignition coil for cylinder 2 are not shorted to ground or supply voltage and have no open circuit.
    6. 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the ignition coil and its diagnostic line.

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Engine misfires
    • Check engine light (emissions warning lamp) is on
    • Engine is not firing on all cylinders
    • Car lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
    • Car hesitates or jerks during acceleration

    What the fault can affect1

    • Closed loop control of lambda is blocked

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
