What does this fault code mean?
The fault concerns ignition coil C, which is the coil for cylinder 3. The engine control module (ECM) controls the coils and checks them through a separate diagnostic line. The code shows which coil is affected, but it does not say which type of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation at the coil connector
- Signal wire short circuit to ground or supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Open circuit in the supply wire
- Diagnostic line short circuit or open circuit
- Damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means the fault is permanent.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check the connector at the ignition coil for cylinder 3 for contact resistance and oxidation.
- 4If several coils fail together, suspect the diagnostic or supply wire. If only one fails, suspect its signal wire or the coil.
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the ignition coil for cylinder 3 have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground or supply voltage.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the ignition coil for cylinder 3 and its wiring.
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine misfires
- Check engine light (emissions warning lamp) is on
- Engine is not firing on all cylinders
- Car lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- Car hesitates or jerks at steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- Closed loop control of lambda is blocked
