What does this fault code mean?
Ignition coil D is the one the code points to, which is the coil for cylinder 4. The control module checks whether the signal for the coil is faulty, through a separate diagnostic line. The code says which coil is affected but not which type of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation at the coil connector
- Signal wire short circuit to ground or supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Open circuit in the supply wire
- Diagnostic line short circuit to ground or supply voltage
- Damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status. 'No fault found' means the fault is not active right now.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check the connector to the ignition coil for cylinder 4 for contact resistance and oxidation.
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the ignition coil for cylinder 4 have no open circuit and are not shorted to ground or supply voltage.
- 5Check that the ignition coil is secure and not damaged, for example cracked.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the ignition coil for cylinder 4 and its diagnostic line.
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine misfires
- Check engine light (emissions warning lamp) is on
- Engine is not firing on all cylinders
- Car lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- Car hesitates or jerks at steady speed
What the fault can affect1
- Closed loop control of lambda is blocked
