What does this fault code mean?
The code applies to the exhaust camshaft sensor on bank 1. The engine control module (ECM) reads the gear wheel on the camshaft through the sensor, and the fault is stored when the ECM counts too few segments over a set number of crankshaft revolutions. The code does not say which type of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire short circuit to ground
- Signal wire short circuit to supply voltage
- Damaged camshaft sensor
- Camshaft sensor in the wrong position
- Loose connection
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine, raise the engine speed a few times and read the fault status. 'Fault found' means the fault is permanent.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check the connector at the exhaust camshaft sensor on bank 1 for play, contact resistance and oxidation.
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the exhaust camshaft sensor on bank 1 is not shorted to ground or supply voltage and has no open circuit.
- 5Check that the camshaft sensor is correctly fitted in its position.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the camshaft sensor and its wiring.
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine is hard to start
- Check engine light is on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- The ECM uses the crankshaft sensor signal instead
