What does this fault code mean?

The fault is recorded as intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and it may not be present right now. The engine control module (ECM) reads the teeth of the camshaft gear wheel through the camshaft sensor and counts how many segments there are over a set number of crankshaft revolutions. The code applies to the camshaft sensor on bank 1.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
    • Open circuit in the signal wire
    • Signal wire short circuit to supply voltage
    • Signal wire short circuit to ground
    • Camshaft sensor fitted incorrectly
    • Damaged camshaft sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status. 'No fault found' means the fault is not active right now.
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact.
    3. 3With the ignition off, check the connector at the camshaft sensor on bank 1 for contact resistance and oxidation.
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the camshaft sensor has no open circuit and is not shorted to ground or supply voltage.
    5. 5Check that the camshaft sensor is correctly fitted in its position.
    6. 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the camshaft sensor on bank 1 and its wiring.

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • Malfunction indicator light (MIL) is on
    • Check engine light is on or behaves abnormally

    What the fault can affect2

    • The ECM uses the crankshaft sensor signal instead
    • Variable valve timing (VVT) control is blocked

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
