What does this fault code mean?
The ECM drives the glow plugs via the glow plug relay and checks the signal to the relay. Although the code is named as a heater indicator circuit fault, it applies to the signal to the relay. The code is stored when that signal is faulty and does not say which type of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Temperature too high
- Contact resistance, oxidation or open circuit in the connections
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, switch on the ignition and read the fault status for the code. 'Fault found' means the fault is permanent.
- 2Check that the fuses are intact.
- 3With the ignition off, check the connectors at the glow plug relay for contact resistance, oxidation and open circuit.
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the glow plug relay has no open circuit.
- 5Check that the glow plug relay is firmly fitted and not damaged.
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop check the glow plug relay and its signal from the engine control module.
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine is hard to start and cranks slowly, sometimes or every time
- Engine is hard to start and cranks slowly on a cold start
What the fault can affect1
- Glow plug relay is not activated
