ECM-P039100 - Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 2). General Failure Information. No sub type information
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (2007–), XC90 (2003–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) reads the camshaft position sensor for the exhaust camshaft on bank 2, which is the cylinder bank nearest the passenger compartment. The fault is set when the control module detects an incorrect number of segments over two crankshaft revolutions, which equals one camshaft revolution. The signal is therefore outside the expected range.
Possible causes
- Occasional faults in the cable harness or connectors
- Camshaft position sensor fitted incorrectly
- Damaged camshaft position sensor
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and rev it a few times until the diagnosis shows complete, then read the fault status for the code
- 2If the fault status shows Fault found, the fault is active; if it shows No fault found, the fault is not active at this moment
- 3Check that the camshaft position sensor is firmly fitted and in the correct position
- 4Check that the connector to the camshaft position sensor is secure and not oxidised
- 5Measure with a multimeter that the wires to the camshaft position sensor have no open circuit and that the signal cable has no contact with ground or supply voltage
- 6After a repair, check that the diagnosis completes and that the fault status shows No fault found
Symptoms you may notice1
- The Check engine (malfunction indicator) light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- The control module uses the signal from the engine speed sensor instead of the camshaft position sensor
