Volvo models this fault code applies to

    Applies to the following models:

Show models by year and engine (2)
    • Volvo S80 (2007–)2010–2011Engine D4164T only
    • Volvo V70 (2008–)2010–2011Engine D4164T only

What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) monitors exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and sets the fault when the flow is too low. Although the code is named as excessive flow, the condition is a flow that is too low through the EGR system. The fault can be caused by an air leak in the intake system or by a blocked or damaged EGR valve.

    Possible causes

    • Air leak in the intake system
    • Blocked or clogged EGR valve
    • Damaged EGR valve

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the EGR valve can be fully closed and opened without sticking; dirt and soot can make it stick
    2. 2Check that the EGR valve or its connections are not blocked or sooted up again
    3. 3Look at the EGR valve's O-ring and gasket for damage
    4. 4Check the intake system for air leaks, such as loose hoses and connections
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the EGR valve position at idle and check that it changes when the engine runs
    6. 6After a repair or replacement, a workshop needs to carry out an adaption of the EGR valve

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • The car lacks power, especially when pulling away from a standstill
    • The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly during acceleration, at steady speed or when slowing down
    • The Check engine (malfunction indicator) light comes on or behaves abnormally
    • A text message and warning symbol show in the display

    What the fault can affect1

    • Engine torque is limited

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
