What does this fault code mean?
The fault is set when the ECM finds that returning to normal operation takes too long after soot particles have been burned off. The check can only run while soot is being burned.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake system
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Sticking EGR valve
- Damaged throttle unit (intake damper)
What you can do
- 1If other fault codes are stored in the control module, troubleshoot those first, since this code can be caused by faults in other engine functions
- 2Check that the EGR valve connector is firmly seated and not oxidised
- 3Check that the EGR valve is not sticking from soot or dirt and that it moves freely
- 4Check that the intake system does not leak air
- 5Check the throttle unit connector for contact resistance and oxidation, and see that the damper moves freely
- 6If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault status for the code after the engine has run for a while
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
