What does this fault code mean?
The ECM alternates the fuel mixture between rich and lean and compares the rear oxygen sensor signal with the front one. If the rear sensor switches too quickly, this is read as reduced efficiency of the bank 1 catalytic converter, and the code is set when efficiency falls below the limit.
Possible causes
- Misfiring
- Air leak in the exhaust or intake system
- Faulty fuel pressure or uneven compression
- One or more injectors damaged or blocked
- Damaged front heated oxygen sensor (bank 1)
- Damaged or removed catalytic converter (bank 1)
What you can do
- 1Check the exhaust system for air leaks, especially at joints and seams
- 2Look for air leaks in the intake system, for example at hoses and connections
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault status and check that the oxygen sensors have not been swapped at the catalytic converter
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the oxygen sensor is not short-circuited to ground (the body)
- 5Have a workshop check the fuel pressure and the engine compression, since this needs measuring
- 6If the fault remains after this, have a workshop assess whether the front oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter needs attention
Symptoms you may notice4
- The Check engine (malfunction indicator) light comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine stalls at idle, at times that are unclear or all the time
- The engine does not start or only cranks, at times that are unclear or all the time
- The car performs poorly and lacks power
What the fault can affect1
- Control using the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
