What does this fault code mean?
The ECM continuously compares the signal from the temperature sensor on the front catalytic converter with a calculated value. The fault is set when the signal is wrong, and
Possible causes
- Loose connection
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit or short to ground in the signal cable
- Open circuit in the ground lead
- Damaged temperature sensor at the catalytic converter
What you can do
- 1Check that the connectors to the temperature sensor at the catalytic converter are firmly seated and not oxidised
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal cable has no break and is not short-circuited to ground (the body)
- 3Check that the ground wire to the sensor is intact
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the sensor value with the ignition on and see whether it seems reasonable
- 5Read and clear the fault code, then switch the ignition on again to see whether it returns
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the temperature sensor at the catalytic converter
Symptoms you may notice1
- The Check engine (malfunction indicator) light comes on or behaves abnormally
