What does this fault code mean?
The code states that the EGR valve has jammed in the open position. The ECM compares the position sensor value in the valve with a desired value and sets the code when the valve does not follow it.
Possible causes
- Leak in the fresh air part
- Damaged position sensor or damaged EGR valve
- Signal cable shorted to supply voltage
- Ground cable open or shorted to supply voltage
- Supply cable shorted to battery voltage
- EGR valve sticks from dirt or soot
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, start the engine and read the fault status and the EGR valve position
- 2Check that the fresh air part does not leak, for example at hoses and connections
- 3Clean the EGR valve of dirt and soot and check that it moves freely
- 4Check that the connectors to the EGR valve are firmly seated and not oxidised
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal cable is not shorted to supply voltage
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the EGR valve and make an adaption after any replacement
Symptoms you may notice4
- The engine is hard to start, at times that are unclear or all the time
- The idle is uneven
- The car performs poorly and lacks power
- The Check engine (malfunction indicator) light comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect3
- EGR control is lost
- Burning of soot particles does not take place
- Engine torque is limited
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
